Pune, 7th August 2025: With the much-awaited Ganesh festival just weeks away, concerns over noise and light pollution are once again being raised in Pune. Despite a ban on laser beams and DJ music during processions, senior citizens claim that these restrictions are routinely ignored and have now written to Chief Justice of India, B.R. Gavai, demanding strict enforcement of court orders.

In their letter, the citizens said that although Pune police conduct meetings ahead of the festival and issue instructions for strict compliance, the reality on the ground is different. They alleged that court guidelines regarding noise limits and laser light usage are flouted each year, with no substantial action taken by the police or civic authorities.

The letter also urged the Supreme Court to initiate Suo-moto proceedings and hold political leaders and administrative officials accountable for repeated violations.

Residents complained that loud DJ setups and laser light shows during the Ganesh processions make it difficult to stay indoors peacefully. They emphasized that while they are not against the celebration itself, the excessive noise and blinding lights must be regulated for the sake of public health and well-being.

Last year, Pune authorities had capped noise levels during the festival at 80 decibels. However, multiple localities reportedly crossed this limit, raising alarm among health experts. Doctors have warned that continuous exposure to sound above 80 dB can cause hearing damage, stress, and other health complications.

The senior citizens have appealed to the Chief Justice to ensure accountability and prompt action so that the festival can be celebrated in a safer and more disciplined manner.
