Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will continue receiving 21 TMC of water, as no supply cuts have been imposed despite earlier warnings from the state water resources department.

During the Canal Committee meeting held on March 1, Water Resources Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil confirmed that there will be no reduction in Pune’s water supply. The state had previously warned PMC about potential water cuts starting in February, but the decision to continue the current supply has been upheld.

Water Supply and Payment Dues

The Water Resources Department had approved 11.60 TMC for Pune, while PMC has been drawing an additional 7.95 TMC. This additional water supply will continue, along with 1 TMC from the Bhama Askhed dam and 0.60 TMC from the Pavana dam.

The issue of excess water usage had sparked controversy when Minister Vikhe Patil suggested issuing a notice to PMC for overconsumption. This led to strong criticism from city leaders, after which Vikhe Patil clarified that PMC will pay ₹200 crore in pending dues by March-end.

Concerns Over Rural Water Supply

The Water Resources Department has warned that if PMC continues to use additional water, it could impact rural areas. Farmers may challenge this legally, and a resolution must be found. A joint meeting of MLAs and officials from both departments will be held next week to discuss the matter.

Vikhe Patil noted, “As Pune’s population continues to grow, additional water supply will be necessary. However, discrepancies exist in the city’s water distribution and treatment, which need to be addressed.”
