Pune: In a distressing incident in Sai Nagar, Kondhwa, two women sustained injuries due to nylon kite strings. One of the victims, Jyoti Kadre, suffered severe neck injuries while traveling on her two-wheeler. She was accompanied by her mother-in-law at the time of the accident. Kadre reported that other two-wheeler riders also encountered similar injuries in the same area.

Violation of the Nylon String Ban

The Maharashtra government had banned the production, sale, and use of nylon kite strings in 2017 to safeguard humans, animals, and the environment. The penalty for violating this ban includes fines up to ₹5,000 and imprisonment for up to three years. Despite this, nylon kite strings continue to be sold and used widely in Pune.

Statistics and Enforcement

The police have registered at least 16 cases involving nylon strings since the ban was implemented. The highest number of cases, seven, were recorded in 2023, while four cases have been filed so far in 2024. Despite five arrests, the open sale of these strings remains a significant issue.

Citizens Demand Action

This incident, particularly during the kite-flying season around Makar Sankranti, has sparked public outrage. Residents are calling for stricter enforcement of the ban to prevent further injuries. Many have highlighted the danger these strings pose, especially to animals and pedestrians.

Sharing her harrowing experience, Kadre said: "While riding my bike with my mother-in-law, a nylon string suddenly tightened around my neck, causing us to fall. I suffered severe neck injuries and had to be hospitalized. The authorities must take strict action to stop the use of these dangerous strings."
