Pune: Yogita Bhosale-Nikam has been appointed as the Municipal Secretary of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), becoming the first woman to hold this position in the corporation's 75-year history.
The role of Municipal Secretary had been vacant since the retirement of Sunil Parkhi in August 2020. Efforts to fill the position were delayed as none of the applicants met the required educational qualifications and experience.
Simultaneously, the Deputy Municipal Secretary position was also vacant, prompting the administration to appoint Yogita Bhosale-Nikam to this post. In addition, the responsibility of the Municipal Secretary was temporarily assigned to Labor Officer Shivaji Daundkar.
When Daundkar retired in 2023, Bhosale-Nikam was given the additional charge of the Municipal Secretary role. Following her promotion, Pune Municipal Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale officially appointed her to the position.
A resident of Wai Taluka in Satara district, Bhosale-Nikam's appointment represents a significant milestone in the history of PMC as she is the first woman to hold the role of Municipal Secretary. Her tenure is expected to last for a substantial period, providing stability to the administration.
The appointment has been widely welcomed, with the Former Mayors' Association extending its congratulations. Meanwhile, her promotion has left the positions of Protocol Officer and Deputy Municipal Secretary vacant, which the administration is expected to fill soon.
