Pune: Visitors to the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park, Katraj, will soon have the opportunity to see new wildlife species, as the zoo prepares to introduce marmosets and tamarins—exotic primates—along with the Indian wild dog (dhole). These additions are expected to enhance the zoo’s biodiversity and visitor experience.

Authorities have confirmed that the construction of enclosures for these species is expected to be completed within a year. Following this, the process of acquiring the animals will commence in accordance with regulatory approvals.

The Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park is home to a variety of species, including tigers, lions, elephants, deer, and Indian bison. The zoo experiences heavy footfall on weekends and holidays, drawing visitors of all age groups, school excursions, and tourists from across the country.

Animal Exchange Process

As part of standard zoological exchange programs, surplus animals from the Rajiv Gandhi Zoo are sent to other zoological parks in exchange for new species. However, the procurement of foreign species like marmosets and tamarins involves a lengthy and complex process, requiring approvals from the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) and compliance with international regulations.

Katraj Zoo Statistics

  • Total Animals: 425

  • Total Species: 57

  • Key Mammals: Tiger, lion, elephant, bear, Indian bison, blackbuck, sambar deer, giant squirrel, wolf, fox

  • Reptiles: Cobra, Russell’s viper, reticulated python, Indian python, crocodile

The addition of marmosets, tamarins, and dholes will further diversify the zoo’s collection, making it an even more appealing destination for wildlife enthusiasts.
