The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced plans to issue new banknotes in the denominations of Rs 10 and Rs 500, both part of the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series. These notes will feature the signature of RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra, who took office in December 2024. The design of these new banknotes will remain consistent with previous issues in the same series, ensuring continuity and familiarity for users.
Signature of Governor Sanjay Malhotra: The new notes will bear the signature of Governor Malhotra, marking a change from previous notes signed by his predecessor, Shaktikanta Das.
Design Consistency: The design elements, including security features and motifs, will be similar to existing notes in the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series. For the Rs 500 note, the theme is centered around the Red Fort, an Indian heritage site, with a stone grey color and dimensions of 66mm x 150mm.
Legal Tender Status: All existing Rs 10 and Rs 500 banknotes will continue to be legal tender alongside the new issues, ensuring a smooth transition and no disruption to financial transactions.
In recent months, the RBI has been actively updating its currency series to reflect changes in leadership and to maintain the integrity of the Indian rupee. This includes the announcement of new Rs 100 and Rs 200 denomination banknotes also bearing Governor Malhotra's signature.
