Sahyadri Giribhraman Sanstha Seeks Concrete Steps to Prevent Bee Attacks on Tourists

Extensive forests and agricultural land surrounding Shivneri Fort provide an ideal habitat for bees, making their conservation critical for maintaining the local ecological balance.

Pune: With the rising number of bee attacks on tourists in Shivneri Fort and the surrounding cave complexes, Sahyadri Giribhraman Sanstha has urged authorities to develop an action plan for both preventing such incidents and conserving bee populations.

The organization submitted a formal memorandum to the Forest and Archaeology Departments, highlighting the vital role of bees in the ecosystem. Experts have pointed out that the indiscriminate use of chemical pesticides in agriculture is causing a decline in the bee population, making conservation efforts more crucial.

Significance of Bees in the Region

The extensive forests and agricultural land surrounding Shivneri Fort provide an ideal habitat for bees, making their conservation critical for maintaining the local ecological balance. The caves and fort area house several long-established bee colonies, which are being disturbed due to irresponsible tourist behavior.

According to the organization, some unruly visitors provoke the bees, leading to frequent attacks, particularly during summer. The most recent incidents occurred during the Shiv Jayanti celebrations, when two bee attacks took place within a span of two days.

Concerns Over Tourist Safety

  • Hundreds of tourists, including children, suffer injuries every year due to bee attacks.

  • Several foreign tourists have also been affected by these incidents.

  • The summer season sees a rise in such attacks, as the heat increases bee activity and the influx of tourists disturbs their colonies.

Urgent Need for Preventive Measures

The organization has stressed the need for proactive safety measures to mitigate risks while ensuring that conservation efforts are not compromised. The memorandum calls for:

  • Expert-led conservation strategies to protect and relocate bee colonies if necessary.

  • Tourist awareness campaigns to educate visitors on responsible behavior.

  • Precautionary protocols such as designated safe zones and warning signs in high-risk areas.
