Pune: A woman attempted self-immolation at the Shirur Police Station on Wednesday (August 22) evening, highlighting the severe issue of noise pollution from a local school and the alleged negligence of both the police and school authorities.

Suman Sakharam Salve, a resident of the Ramling area in Shirur, reported that her children’s studies for competitive exams were being severely disrupted by loud music blaring from St. Joseph School late at night.

On June 20, 2024, at around 10:30 PM, Salve approached the school to complain about the excessive noise from the school’s DJ system. Instead of addressing her concerns, Salve was allegedly assaulted, pushed, and threatened by the school staff.

Shockingly, her attempts to document the incident were thwarted when her phone was forcibly taken, and the recorded video was deleted.

Salve’s multiple attempts to file a complaint with the Shirur Police over the past two months were allegedly ignored, leading her to a desperate act of pouring petrol on herself within the police station premises. It was only after this drastic measure that the police finally registered her complaint late at night.

Salve’s complaint also included a troubling detail that the school staff was intoxicated during the incident, further aggravating the seriousness of the situation.

The irresponsible behavior of the school authorities, coupled with their alleged attempts to cover up the incident by filing a false report against Salve, has caused a significant uproar in Shirur.

This incident has brought to light not only the harmful effects of noise pollution on children’s education, but also the failure of the local police to act on such a serious complaint.
