Pune: The mandatory installation of High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) for vehicles in Pune has seen a poor response from citizens. Despite the government mandate to curb vehicle theft and counterfeit number plates, many vehicle owners have yet to comply.
According to official data, Pune has around 25 lakh older vehicles, but only 45,000 of them (0.75%) have been fitted with HSRP number plates so far. Since the implementation of the rule, approximately 2.5 lakh vehicle owners have registered for HSRP plates, but delays in supply from vendor companies have left them waiting for installation.
The HSRP system is aimed at preventing vehicle theft and tracking stolen vehicles efficiently. The number plates are tamper-proof, ensuring that they cannot be easily replaced with fake plates.

Transport Department Expresses Concern Over Poor Response

A transport department official urged compliance, saying: "Vehicle owners must get HSRP number plates installed at the earliest. Non-compliance will lead to strict penalties."
