Kapil Dev suffers heart attack, undergoes surgery in Delhi

India's legendary cricketer Kapil Dev suffered a heart attack and underwent angioplasty at a hospital in Delhi on Friday.

A press release issued by Fortis Escorts Hospital read, ''Former Indian Cricket captain Kapil Dev, Age 62 years, came to Fortis Escorts Heart Institute (Okhla Road) emergency department at 1:00 am on 23rd October with a complaint of chest pain. He was evaluated and an emergency coronary Angioplasty was performed by Dr Atul Mathur, Director of Cardiology Department, in the middle of the night."

''Currently, he is admitted in ICU and under the close supervision of Dr. Atul Mathur and his team. Kapil Dev is stable now and he is expected to get discharged in a couple of days,'' it added.

Haryana Hurricane as he is fondly known has played 131 tests, where he has scored 5248 runs at an average of 31.05, with a highest of 163. He has also bagged 434 wickets at an average of 29.65 with the best bowling figures of 146/11 in a Test match. Kapil Dev is still the highest fast bowling wicket taker for India in Test cricket.

Talking about ODIs, the legend has played 225 matches and has scored 3783 runs at an average of 23.79, with a highest score of 175. On the bowling front, he has managed to bag 273 wickets at an average of 27.45 with the best bowling figures of 5/43. Kapil led India from the very front as the country defied all the odds to beat the mighty West Indies in the final at the Lord’s to lift the World Cup in 1983.
