Pune, 3rd December 2024: Allegations have surfaced against colleges affiliated with the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) for reportedly preventing students from opting for Marathi as a subject.

This development has raised questions about the university's commitment to preserving the very language it was established to promote.

Students have accused the Kasturi Shikshan Sanstha’s college in Shikrapur of not allowing them to select Marathi, which has sparked outrage among linguistic and cultural advocates.

A video from one of the affected students has gone viral on social media, further intensifying the issue.

The university administration responded to the complaints by forming an inquiry committee.

The committee has completed its investigation, and its findings will be reviewed by the Deans’ Council. SPPU Vice-Chancellor Dr. Suresh Gosavi stated, "The inquiry report has been submitted to the university and will be discussed with the Deans’ Council. Action will be taken as per university regulations."

During a recent Senate session, member Dadabhau Shinalkar tabled a motion urging punitive measures against the college, including the revocation of its affiliation.

He also highlighted that many affiliated colleges lack full-time principals and faculty, creating hurdles for students. He demanded stricter measures to ensure that colleges meet the university's academic and administrative standards.

Yuva Sena Assistant Secretary Kalpesh Yadav also voiced his concerns, stating, "Denying students the right to study Marathi is a serious issue. If no action is taken, we will stage a protest."
