Pune: The discovery of marijuana in a hostel room at Savitribai Phule Pune University has caused a major stir.
The Chatuhshrungi Police have registered a case against two students residing in the hostel, following a complaint filed by Professor Sanjaykumar Kamble, who also serves as the hostel rector.
Professor Kamble received a tip-off on Wednesday (December 4) evening regarding a suspicious smell emanating from Room No. 83 of the hostel.
Accompanied by campus security guard Bharat Thube, he inspected the room and found two students, Pratik Ankush Gujar (20) and Akash Mayank Brahmbhatt (20). Upon questioning, both students provided evasive responses, prompting the professor to call the police.
When the Chatuhshrungi Police arrived, a thorough search was conducted. A pouch containing 12 grams of marijuana was found in Akash Brahmbhatt’s pants pocket.
The accused students have been booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Sub-Inspector Pranil Chougule is currently handling the investigation.
Savitribai Phule Pune University, which houses over 14 hostels for students across various disciplines, maintains strict discipline within its premises.
Professor Kamble, who has been the rector since 2023, conducts regular inspections to ensure compliance. The incident has raised concerns over the prevalence of narcotics on campus, with university authorities vowing to strengthen surveillance measures.
