Pune: The upcoming Ganeshotsav will witness a historic moment as ‘Shikhandi,’ Maharashtra's first transgender Dhol-Tasha troupe, is set to perform.

Led by Manasvi Goilkar, the group was born out of a desire to participate in traditional festivities and overcome societal rejection.

After being turned away by several troupes, Manasvi found inspiration in the adversity and established ‘Shikhandi’ to create a space for transgender individuals in the world of Dhol-Tasha, traditionally dominated by other groups like those for boys, girls, and artists.

The troupe, consisting of 30 members, started its practice sessions on August 4 in the Market Yard area, overcoming initial hurdles such as securing instruments, finding a practice space, and arranging training.

The troupe made its first public performance on August 16 at a state-level event in Nanded, organized by the Maharashtra government. Their performance aimed to showcase the capability and equality of transgender individuals in society.

Under the mentorship of Kadambari Shaikh, who envisioned the independent troupe, ‘Shikhandi’ overcame numerous challenges with determination.

Atul Behere from the Nadabrahma Dhol-Tasha troupe agreed to train the group, and additional support was provided by Pritesh Kamble, Praveen Sonawane, and former Deputy Mayor Deepak Mankar.

This year, ‘Shikhandi’ will perform in front of the five prominent Ganpati idols, including the famed Dagdusheth Ganpati, with the mission to affirm that transgender individuals can stand on equal footing with others in all walks of life.

Manasvi said, "My mentor, Kadambari Shaikh, decided to start an independent troupe for transgender individuals, and accordingly, we began our work. However, none of us had experience with playing the instruments, so the question arose, what to do? But we paved our way with strong willpower and confidence."
