The ruling was delivered by Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai of the Karkardooma court in Delhi.

Umar Khalid and several others were charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), an anti-terrorism statute, along with sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), for allegedly serving as the "masterminds" behind the 2020 riots in northeast Delhi, which resulted in 53 deaths and over 700 injuries.

The unrest broke out amid large-scale demonstrations against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
