Pune: Baramati is set for another intense political showdown as Yugendra Pawar, a leader from Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar), has indicated that he may contest against Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Chief and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in the upcoming sugar factory elections.
Yugendra Pawar has announced the formation of a new panel, signaling his intention to enter the electoral battle once again. This move sets the stage for another direct contest between uncle and nephew, reigniting political tensions in the region.
Workers Want a Contest, Says Yugendra Pawar
According to Yugendra Pawar, workers in the sugar industry have expressed their desire for elections. He highlighted Sharad Pawar’s long-standing contribution to the sugar industry, mentioning factories like Malegaon Sugar Factory and Someshwar Sugar Factory. He further emphasized that Sharad Pawar’s involvement in this sector spans over four to five decades, making his influence crucial in these elections.
"Sharad Pawar has played a major role in the sugar industry, not just today, but for the last 40-50 years. Workers want elections, and we are prepared to take up this challenge."
— Yugendra Pawar, NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) leader
Political Implications: Another Baramati Battle?
Yugendra Pawar’s decision to enter the sugar factory elections could lead to another political confrontation with Ajit Pawar. He has suggested that his panel will contest in the Malegaon and Someshwar Sugar Factory elections, raising the possibility of a renewed political rivalry within the Pawar family.
"We have strong candidates, and if we can save the sugar factory, why should we not contest the election?"
— Yugendra Pawar
A Rematch After the Baramati Assembly Election
This is not the first time that Yugendra Pawar has challenged Ajit Pawar. In the Baramati Assembly elections, he had contested against his uncle in a high-profile battle that drew statewide attention. However, Ajit Pawar decisively defeated him in that election.
