Pune: The Vetal Tekdi Birding Marathon 2024, organized by the Vetal Tekdi Rescue Action Committee, highlighted the rich biodiversity of one of Pune’s most iconic green spaces. This week-long event brought together avid birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts, culminating in the documentation of over 140 bird species found on Vetal Tekdi.
Participants meticulously recorded their observations, submitting detailed reports that included species identification and bird sounds. Awards were given in various categories to recognize outstanding contributions.
Ketan Bhave, Suhas Rao, and Pankaj Inamdar excelled in the "Best Checklist" category, while the team of Nachiket Lihite, Prateek Pal, and Shaunak Deshpande earned accolades for the "Best Trip Report." A special award was presented to Shamik Parab for his precise documentation of a European Honey Buzzard, a bird species spotted in Maharashtra for the first time.
The event witnessed the presence of notable personalities, including Mahadev Mohite, Deputy Conservator of Forests, Pune Forest Department, ACF Deepak Pawar, and actor-conservationist Suyash Tilak. Speaking at the event, Ranjeet Rane, a member of the Vetal Tekdi Rescue Action Committee, emphasized the significance of preserving Vetal Tekdi's biodiversity.
“Vetal Tekdi is one of Pune’s richest biodiversity hubs. Preserving it is our collective responsibility. The aim of this marathon was to discover and record new bird species, spreading awareness and encouraging further research,” he remarked.
Vetal Tekdi, known for its unique ecosystem, hosts over 260 species of birds, plants, and animals, making it a critical area for conservation. The event concluded with actor Suyash Tilak delivering an inspiring address on the importance of protecting nature’s treasures.
