Pune: In a tragic incident in Wagholi, a six-year-old girl lost her life after falling into an uncovered water tank on the ground floor of an under-construction building.

The victim, identified as Rekha Mukesh Singh Chauhan, fell into the tank located near the staircase of a three-story building owned by Ramesh Balaji Munde, a resident of Kawade Vasti.

The child's father, Mukesh Kumarsingh Chauhan, had gone to Wadgaon Sheri with his wife on September 7 for slab work, leaving their four children at home to play.

Upon their return at around 6 p.m., they realized that Rekha was missing. Despite extensive searches by the family and neighbors, she could not be located. Finally, at around 10:30 p.m., the parents filed a missing person report at the Wagholi police chowky.

The police immediately launched a search operation in the surrounding area. In the early hours of the following day, around 1:30 a.m., Rekha was found drowned in an open water tank inside the under-construction building, located just behind her residence.

The water tank, positioned on the ground floor, was left without a cover or any safety measures, making it a dangerous hazard. The police have registered a case of negligence against the building owner, Ramesh Munde, for failing to secure the tank, which led to the child’s death.

Senior Inspector Pandit Rejitwad from Lonikand Police Station is leading the investigation into the incident. Authorities are urging builders and property owners to ensure that safety measures are in place, especially in under-construction areas, to prevent such tragic accidents
