Pune: In Wagholi, a controversy has erupted over plans to erect two billboards near the boundary wall of Vishnuji Shekoji Satav School, which serves approximately 3,000 students.

The proposal, initiated by a local businessperson, has drawn strong opposition from parents and residents, who argue that the billboards pose a significant danger to the children.

The school, which previously set back its boundary wall to allow for future highway widening, now faces the prospect of having billboards installed at both corners of this space. Primary classes are conducted near the inner side of the boundary wall, raising concerns about the safety of young students.

Recent incidents, including fatal billboard collapses in Wagholi and other parts of Maharashtra, have heightened fears. Many illegal and non-compliant billboards have been removed following such tragedies, and residents are determined to prevent a similar risk near Satav School.

Ketan Jadhav, President of the Wagheshwar Sports Club, emphasized the danger, stating, "Erecting billboards near the school boundary is hazardous for students.

If permission has been granted, it should be revoked immediately; if not, it should not be granted at all." The businessperson behind the plan reportedly claims to have received approval from the education board and the municipal corporation, but residents remain unconvinced.

Efforts to reach officials from the Nagar Road Ward Office for clarification were met with news of a recent transfer. In the meantime, concerned citizens have written to the municipal corporation, police, and Pune District Education Board, urging them to prevent the installation of the billboards.
