Pune: A bold and inspiring act of bravery by a woman in Pune has sparked discussions about women’s safety and awareness. Priya Lashkar, a sports teacher from Shirdi, confronted a drunken man who misbehaved with her while she was traveling on a Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus with her husband and child.
Displaying exemplary courage, Priya caught hold of the man and physically retaliated, ensuring he faced the consequences of his behavior. The incident was captured on video and has since gone viral, with many applauding Priya’s actions.
Incident Highlights Police Inaction
After the altercation, Priya took the man to the Shaniwarwada police outpost. However, no officers were present at the time. It took her half an hour to contact local corporator Ajay Khedekar, who assisted in bringing the situation to the attention of the authorities. Despite the severity of the incident, none of the women passengers came forward to support Priya.
A Call for Unity Among Women
Speaking about the incident, Priya emphasized the importance of women standing together. “Women must unite and raise their voices collectively to stop atrocities. Together, we can create a safer environment,” she said.
The incident serves as a reminder of the collective role society must play in ensuring women’s safety. If fellow passengers had supported Priya during the ordeal, the outcome could have been more empowering.
Need for Stronger Measures
This incident underscores the necessity of proactive measures from the police and society to create a safer environment for women. Encouraging women to act courageously and fostering solidarity among them are vital steps toward this goal.
