Pune: The Marathi Language Department of the Maharashtra Government has announced that the third World Marathi Conference will be held in Pune this year. Scheduled to take place from January 31 to February 2 at the Ferguson College Grounds, the conference aims to celebrate Marathi literature and culture on a global scale.
Dignitaries to Attend the Inaugural Ceremony
The inaugural ceremony will witness the presence of prominent leaders, including Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar. This conference marks a historic moment as it will be the first to be held after Marathi was conferred the status of a classical language.
Honoring Literary Excellence and Youth Focus
This year, the conference introduces a tradition of honoring one senior writer of international acclaim and a young personality who has contributed significantly to Marathi culture. Senior writer Madhu Mangesh Karnik and actor Riteish Deshmukh have been chosen for this recognition. The conference will emphasize the involvement and representation of the youth.
Program Highlights
The conference promises a diverse range of sessions, including discussions on children's literature, saint literature, folk arts, and workshops. A grand procession will kick off the event, starting from Bal Gandharva Rang Mandir and concluding at Ferguson College. Other activities will include poetry meets featuring young and senior poets, discussions on the classical status of Marathi, and panel discussions.
The Marathi Language Minister, Uday Samant, stated that detailed consultations with Pune’s literary figures have ensured a well-rounded program that reflects diverse perspectives. A detailed schedule will be announced shortly.
Participation of Overseas Marathi Writers and Enthusiasts
The conference organizers aim to involve Marathi-speaking individuals worldwide. Speaking about the expenses incurred last year to facilitate the participation of overseas Marathi writers and enthusiasts, Minister Samant emphasized the importance of their presence: “Though they live abroad, they remain connected to Maharashtra. Travel expenses were covered last year to ensure their participation, and we will encourage their involvement this year as well.”
The conference seeks to provide a platform for celebrating Marathi language and culture globally, fostering collaboration among Marathi-speaking communities.
