Pune: Yerawada Central Jail has introduced new skill development and healthcare training programs for its inmates, in line with the Prison Department's motto of "Reform and Rehabilitation."

These initiatives aim to harness the inmates' talents and provide them with opportunities for self-improvement while ensuring better healthcare services within the facility.

As part of this program, 56 women inmates received training in soap and perfume-making through a collaboration with "Equitas Development Initiative Pune." Additionally, on January 28, 2025, a cake-making training program was launched in the jail’s bakery division for male prisoners, with guidance provided by experts Madhuri Musale and Ajinkya Shinde.

Yerawada Central Jail, which houses 6,400 inmates, also hosted a one-day healthcare training workshop in collaboration with the District General Hospital Aundh, Pune.

The workshop was designed to train medical officers, assistants, nursing staff, and para-legal volunteers within the prison. It covered practical demonstrations of essential medical procedures and was led by healthcare professionals including Dr. Priyanka Chawale, Dr. Sunil Khalgane, and Dr. Santosh Yenpure.

These initiatives are being implemented under the leadership of senior officials, including Prashant Burade (Additional Director General of Police and Inspector General of Prisons and Correctional Services, Maharashtra) and Dr. Jalindar Supekar (Special Inspector General of Police, Prisons).

The programs are overseen by Swati Sathe, Deputy Inspector General of Prisons, Western Division, Yerawada, Pune. Efforts for the successful execution of these initiatives were coordinated by senior prison officials, including Superintendent Sunil Dhamal, Additional Superintendent P.P. Kadam, and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Indranil Patil, along with other medical and administrative staff.
