Pune: A 24-year-old youngster gave a new lease of life to a 54-year-old patient suffering from liver cirrhosis. The liver was transported via green corridor between Kolhapur and Pune in just three hours on Saturday evening and the transplant was done successfully on Saturday late night at a Pune-based hospital. The recipient has responded well to the transplant.

The recipient was suffering from liver cirrhosis and was taking the treatment at Sahyadri Super Speciality Hospital, Deccan. The liver was donated by a 24-year-old resident of Kolhapur who was declared brain dead at Aster Adhar Hospital after a serious brain injury.

A team of doctors from the hospital harvested the liver on Saturday afternoon after which a green corridor was created between Kolhapur and Pune.

Liver transplant and hepatobiliary surgeon Dr Dinesh Zirpe said they got the information about the donor at Kolhapur and immediately without any delay their team went to the hospital in Kolhapur for harvesting the liver.

“The green corridor with the help of traffic police ensured quick passage and the liver reached Pune in just three hours whereas normally it takes five to six hours. The liver was successfully transplanted on a 54-year-old patient, a resident of Bhosari in Pune. The patient had a swelling in both kidneys and required urgent liver transplant. The kind and noble act of the relatives of donor and the swift teamwork at our department ensured that the patient got a new lease of life,” said Zirpe.
