A record nobody wants: COVID-19 cases in Pune city cross 2 lakh mark

Pune: With 766 new cases, the total of COVID-19 cases in PMC (Pune Municipal Corporation) crossed the two lakh mark on Thursday.

The total number of COVID-19 patients in the city crossed the grim mark of 2 lakh with 3,930 patients in the city still receiving the treatment of COVID-19. It’s almost one year when the first case was reported in the city when a couple travelling from Dubai were infected with the virus.

The first case in the city was reported on March 9. Since then, Pune saw an upward trend in the spread of infection. During the peak season of May-June, Pune shattered all grim records in terms of spreading the contagion. At once, Pune also was the city with the highest number of COVID cases in the country.

With things seaming back to normal, the city has grappled with another wave of COVID-19 from the past few days. The graph of COVID-19 is not flattening its curve here with the city reporting over 300 new cases daily from the past few days. Also, the regions which were considered as ‘Green Zone’ where the cases were comparatively low has now seen a climbing trend in the spread of infection.

The Divisional Commissioner of Pune on Sunday stated that the positivity rate has been hovering above 10 per cent. Thus, to prevent further spread, the administration has decided to shut all schools and colleges till February 28.

The administration has ramped up its testing capacity to over 7,500 per day and till now 11,21,224 have undergone the test since the pandemic. Also, the Mayor of Pune Murlidhar Mohol hinted that if the cases will not decline in the city, PMC can reintroduce the strategy of micro-containment zones here.
