Pune, 6th February 2026: A major accident was narrowly avoided on Thursday morning after a four-wheeler lost control on a bridge over the Bhairoba drain near Ganga Satellite Society in the Wanowrie area and plunged directly into the drain. The driver of the car was seriously injured and trapped inside the vehicle.
Around 10 am, army officer Ashish Kumar Yadav was passing through the area when he noticed a large crowd gathered on the bridge. On learning that a car had fallen into the drain, he sensed that someone might be trapped inside as there was slight movement in the vehicle. Without wasting any time, he climbed down into the drain to assess the situation.
Inside the car, Yadav found the driver unconscious. With the help of local residents, he broke the car window and pulled the injured man out. The driver was bleeding heavily from the nose. Using his military training, Yadav immediately applied pressure with a handkerchief to control the bleeding and brought the victim out of the drain.
There was cash worth around ₹1 to ₹1.5 lakh inside the car. After the driver regained consciousness, Yadav ensured that the money was safely returned to him. The injured man was then rushed to a private hospital in a tempo for urgent medical treatment.
Wanowrie police reached the spot soon after the incident. PSI Balasaheb Wakde from Wanowrie Market Police station said, “The injured driver has been admitted to a private hospital. Doctors have informed us that his condition is stable.”
Police later began the process of removing the car from the drain with the help of a crane. Traffic in the area was affected for about an hour. Officials are investigating the exact cause of the accident, including factors such as speed, road conditions and the safety barriers on the bridge.
Local residents have praised Ashish Kumar Yadav for his bravery and humanity. His timely intervention ensured that a life was saved and prevented the accident from turning fatal.
