Pune, 21 June 2025: The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s revised draft development plan recently triggered controversy over a proposed slaughterhouse near Alandi, a site of deep religious significance for the Warkari sect and Hindutva groups. The plan suggested setting up the facility on a 4-acre plot along the Indrayani River, near the Moshi-Dudulgaon border, sparking widespread opposition.

Concerns were raised about the impact of such a project on Alandi, which is the resting place of Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj and a key pilgrimage centre for lakhs of devotees. Local residents, cow protectors, and various religious groups voiced strong objections, highlighting the site’s proximity to holy rivers and spiritual institutions.

Responding to the backlash, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis clarified during his Pune visit that the government has no intention of allowing a slaughterhouse near Alandi. He confirmed that the land reserved for this purpose in the draft plan will be de-reserved to protect the sanctity of the area.

The controversial reservation was listed as Reservation No. 5/220 on survey number 325 in Moshi, right beside Vedshri Tapovan on the Dehu-Alandi Road. Alongside this, an animal hospital was also planned under Reservation No. 5/221 on a neighbouring plot, adding to concerns among locals and spiritual organisations.

The decision to withdraw the reservation has brought relief to the community and religious groups. Local leaders appreciated the swift resolution, stressing that the move aligns with the state government’s commitment to respect cultural sentiments and protect places of worship from inappropriate development.
