PUNE: Officials of Vishrambaug Wada police station have lodged a case of negligence against a doctor and staff members of Vatsalya Hospital in Budhwar Peth after a newborn baby girl suffered burn injuries due to a blast near a warming machine in which the new born was kept after delivery on Tuesday.

The police said that Dr Gaurav Chopade was booked under section 287 (Whoever does, with any machinery, any act so rashly or negligently as to endanger human life) and 338 (Causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code.

Police officials said complainant Vijay Kadam, who is an autorickshaw driver, had admitted his wife for delivery at Vatsalya Hospital. At around 8.45 am after the surgery of the mother, the new born was shifted to labour ward and was supplied with oxygen. Later, when the complainant and his relatives saw the child and came out of the labour room, suddenly they heard a blast and the child suffered burn injuries. Following the incident, a case of negligence was lodged at Vishrambaug Wada police station against the doctor and hospital staff.

PI Amrut Marathe is investigating the case. PSI S Sakore said the blast took place in the warming machine and the child was shifted to a private hospital for treatment. “We will have to wait for the medical report to check the percentage of burn injuries suffered by the child,” added Sakore.
