Pune, 12 November 2025: In a major development for Pune’s public transport system, the Central Government has approved 1,000 new electric buses for the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) under the PM e-Drive Scheme.
Union Minister for Heavy Industries H.D. Kumaraswamy has given final approval to the proposal, paving the way for the new e-buses to be added to the PMPML fleet soon. This decision is expected to make public transport in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad more efficient, modern, and environmentally friendly.
The introduction of these electric buses will help reduce traffic congestion and carbon emissions, while offering citizens a smoother and more comfortable commuting experience.
Officials involved in the proposal said continuous follow-ups were made over the past few months to coordinate between the Maharashtra and Central Governments. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had also supported the process by ensuring the necessary approvals were expedited through the Reserve Bank and the Union Ministry of Heavy Industries. Following a meeting in New Delhi with Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, the proposal was cleared without delay.
Pune’s public transport system is on the path to major transformation. Currently, the Pune Metro operates over 32 kilometers, with the Shivajinagar–Hinjewadi line set to begin soon. The integration of metro extensions, new bus services, and electric mobility aims to build a “smart, green, and sustainable City.”
MP Murlidhar Mohol expressed gratitude toward Prime Minister Modi, Minister Kumaraswamy, and Chief Minister Fadnavis for their support, calling the move a major milestone toward strengthening Pune’s urban transport network and making the city cleaner and more sustainable.
