Pune, 26 June 2025: In a major development for urban transport in Pune, the Union Cabinet has approved the extension of Pune Metro’s Line-2. The expansion spans 33 kilometers and is estimated to cost ₹3,626 crore. It will include two key corridors: Vanaz to Chandni Chowk (Corridor 2A) and Ramwadi to Wagholi or Vitthalwadi (Corridor 2B). The project aims to be completed in four years.

The announcement came after a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed the decision and highlighted that Pune — India’s ninth most populous city and Maharashtra’s second-largest — already has a 33.3 km operational metro network, with another 33 km under construction. The new extension will add 15 metro stations, further strengthening the city's connectivity.

Corridor 2A (Vanaz to Chandni Chowk) will be 1.12 km long with two new stations, while Corridor 2B (Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi) will stretch 11.63 km and connect 13 new stations. Both routes will be elevated.

The expansion will connect rapidly developing eastern and western suburbs like Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi. It will also link important junctions such as the District Court Interchange, allowing connectivity with other metro lines like Line-1 (Nigdi to Katraj) and Line-3 (Hinjewadi to District Court).

The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) will implement the project, with funding shared equally by the Central Government, State Government, and international financial agencies.

This expansion is expected to ease traffic congestion on busy routes such as Paud Road and Nagar Road. It also includes integration with intercity bus services from Mumbai, Bengaluru (at Chandni Chowk), and cities like Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Ahmednagar (at Wagholi), providing smooth access to Pune Metro for incoming travelers.

Passenger estimates show that by 2027, around 96,000 people are likely to use this extended metro line daily. This number is projected to grow to 2.01 lakh in 2037, 2.87 lakh in 2047, and 3.49 lakh in 2057.

Union Minister Murlidhar Mohol said continuous follow-up, including discussions with Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, helped secure Cabinet approval. He added that PM Modi and CM Devendra Fadnavis are giving top priority to Pune’s metro expansion.

Minister of State for Urban Development Madhuri Misal added that the growing metro network will bring daily ease of travel, save time, and offer a safer transport option for Pune residents, especially as the city’s urban population continues to grow rapidly.
