Pune, 2nd July 2025: The city witnessed severe disruption in goods and private passenger transport as transport unions launched an indefinite chakka jam (transport strike) from midnight on July 1. The strike was called in protest against restrictions on goods transport vehicles in the city markets and the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) premises, as well as alleged unjustified e-challans issued by the traffic police.

The Maharashtra Rajya Truck Tempo Tankers Bus Transport Mahasangh’s Pune unit led the strike, with leaders Shashikant Dombe, Chandrakant Harpale, and Anil Chakote highlighting how the entry ban on goods vehicles into the APMC yard was affecting thousands of transporters, farmers, traders, and labourers. They pointed out that this restriction has led to increased losses due to fuel wastage and delays, causing unrest among vehicle operators.

Adding to their grievances were complaints against what transporters described as “unfair and excessive” issuance of e-challans by the traffic department. This, combined with logistical challenges, compelled the unions to begin the indefinite strike from the night of July 1.

Key union leaders including Uday Barge and Baba Shinde confirmed their participation in the protest. While some relief was sought by school bus and student transport associations who requested a short grace period, operators of trucks, tempos, tankers, and containers began their strike as scheduled.

Luxury Bus Operators Join In
Meanwhile, the Pune District Luxury Bus Association also announced complete suspension of its services. Association president Balasaheb Khedekar stated that unresolved issues ranging from inadequate parking facilities to ongoing e-challan problems have forced their hand.

The union warned that the strike would continue indefinitely unless the administration intervenes with immediate solutions. They cautioned that the ongoing strike could severely inconvenience citizens and local businesses.
