City societies gear up for social distancing

PUNE: Increase in number of coronavirus (COVID-19) positive patients in the city has prompted housing societies in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad to implement strict measures to ensure social distancing and prevent spread of the virus.

Almost all societies are asking the security guards to wear masks and ensure personal hygiene. Visitors coming to meet residents are being asked to wash hands or use sanitiser at the main gate itself.

Sanjeev Patil from Wagholi said, “At the moment, washing hands has been made mandatory for all visitors. We have kept sanitiser at the society’s entrance gate.” Mrutunjay Kohli, an architect from Balewadi, revealed that his housing society has decided to wait for the situation to normalise before reopening gyms and swimming pools.  Maids coming to work in the society have been asked not to travel outside Pune.

Amruta Tamboli, an occupational therapist from Bavdhan, said that in her society, everyone has been told to ask their maids not to report to work if they are sick with symptoms like cold or cough. Techie Priyanka Pradhan said, “Many societies in Wakad are instructing residents collect their parcels at the main gate as delivery persons will not be allowed inside the premises and security features like biometric lock opening system have been disabled to prevent spread of the virus.”

Big residential societies have shut down their clubhouses, gyms and swimming pools to prevent people from coming in contact as per PMC’s directive.
