Contaminated Water Supply Plagues Sanjay Park Area in Wadgaon Sheri for Over Three Months

Residents suffer from health issues like diarrhea and stomach infections; despite repeated complaints, authorities remain inactive

Pune, 30 June 2025: For the past three months, residents of Sanjay Park and Viman Darshan Society in Wadgaon Sheri have been receiving foul-smelling, contaminated water mixed with sewage. This has led to a spike in health issues such as vomiting, diarrhea, and other stomach-related illnesses. Despite multiple complaints, there has been little action from the authorities, leaving residents frustrated and angry.

Around 50 to 60 households in Lane 4-C and 4-D of Viman Darshan Society, located opposite Pune International Airport, are affected. Locals have repeatedly contacted the former corporator and water supply officials, even submitting samples of the contaminated water. However, they claim the responses have been vague and unhelpful.

The tap water has a yellowish tint and foul odour, forcing residents to rely on private water tankers. With the increasing cost of tankers, they are now forced to buy separate water for domestic use and drinking.

Residents like Mushir Khan, Mehmood Shaikh, and Ayub Mitkari stated that the contaminated water has made people, especially children and the elderly, frequently ill. The water supply department has yet to identify the source of the contamination, and residents allege that officials are delaying the investigation.

Local MLA Bapusaheb Pathare has instructed the water department to stop the contaminated supply and ensure clean drinking water is provided. Attempts to contact the junior engineer of the department went unanswered.

Eknath Gadekar, Executive Engineer of the water supply department, confirmed that the complaint has been received. He said efforts are ongoing to restore clean water supply and added that the source of contamination may be due to leakage from old, unused water connections, which are currently being inspected.
