PUNE: Many citizens approaching the Birth and Death Registration Department of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) have shared that there was a delay in obtaining these certificates. Some of them have even sought help from their local corporators to resolve this issue. 

Shakarnagar resident Mahananda Nanavare (55) told Sakal Times that the officials at this department refused her to hand over death certificate of her son, claiming that the occurrence was not registered in the system developed by them. 

To this, Nanavare met local corporator Ashwini Kadam. The corporator then spoke to Chief Health Officer Ramchandra Hankare, who assured Kadam to look into the matter.

Suryakant Devkar, Assistant Medical Officer of PMC who is handling the charge of Birth and Death Registration Department, said, “I have taken charge of the department just two days ago. I agreed that there is a delay in issuing certificates. Normally, PMC takes 21 days to issue birth and death certificate. We will identify the reason for delay and sort out the issue as early as possible.”

Aparna Basarkar, Registrar of the department, said, “The State Government has issued an order to all civic bodies to use central registration system for issuing birth and death certificates. As it is a new system and officials are taking time to understand it there is a delay in issuing a certificate. It will take one month to regularise this process.”
