Pune: Two Bangladeshi nationals have been arrested by Crime Branch of Pune city police for alleged involvement in a series of burglaries and claimed to have recovered stolen ornaments worth Rs 10.01 lakh from their possession. One of them was deported from the city in May, but came back illegally, and the other one has come on a tourist visa which has expired.
The arrested accused were identified as Idanur Raheman Raqib (62) of Dhaka district and Zakir Kobid Hussen (42) of Dishenpur district in Bangladesh.
“Raqib was arrested earlier also in house break-in cases in the city and he was deported in May. But he came back illegally and again started committing burglaries. Investigations are on to find out how he crossed the Indian border,” Commissioner of Police Rashmi Shukla said.
They were arrested in a theft case of 390 gm gold ornaments from the house of Vidya Bora near Navle Bridge on Sinhagad Road on November 21. While investigating the case a team led by Assistant Police Inspector Ansar Shaikh and Police Inspector Satish Nikam from Crime Branch Unit II found CCTV footage of the housing society and found two men suspiciously entering and leaving.
The police team scanned footages from various locations and found that the duo walked to Navle Bridge and from there travelled in a shared autorickshaw till Katraj via the Pune-Bengaluru Highway.
Accordingly, policemen fanned out in the area, when Police Naik Anirudh Savarde found Raqib moving around in the market of Santoshnagar, Katraj.
“Other police personnel were also informed and they reached the spot. During interrogation, Raqib confessed to the crime and led us to his accomplice who was in their room in Bombay Building in Galli no. 3 of Santoshnagar. Our team recovered stolen ornaments kept there. During the investigation, we found that the duo was involved in thefts at two places in Bibvewadi and one theft in Sahakarnagar,” ACP (Crime Branch) Sameer Shaikh said.
DCP (Crime) Pankaj Dahane added, “In 2015, the accused was arrested for seven thefts in the jurisdiction of Chandan Nagar police station. He was deported and he again returned and committed thefts in Kondhwa in June this year.
It was found that he was involved in thefts in Hadapsar also. Raqib entered India illegally, while Zakir came here on a tourist visa for one month in June this year. Raqib was released on bail on November 2, while Zakir was released on November 6. Since then they had been staying in Santoshnagar, Katraj and had been committing burglaries.”
The investigating team included policemen Rajkumar Tambe, Suresh Ugle, Raju Kedari, Siraj Shaikh, Dinesh Gudankush, Ajay Kharade, Vishal Bhilare, Atul Gaikwad, Kishor Waggu, Ajit Farande, Prasad Jangilwad, Chandrakant Mahajan and Ganesh Narute.
