PUNE: The Adarsh Krida Sanstha Awards, which are presented by the Symbiosis Sports Centre, were awarded to five sports institutions and a Paralympic gold medal winner from the city at an award ceremony held on Thursday. The awards were presented by NCP Chief Sharad Pawar in the presence of other guests.

Explaining that the awards were instituted to honour the sports institutes who have played an important role in the evolution of sports, SB Mujumdar, Founder of Symbiosis, said, “These institutions have made a huge contribution in the field of sports and culture. These awards are to commemorate their legacy.”

The awards were given to Sakhlipir Talim Rashtriya Maruti Mandal, which was established in 1919, Sanmitra Sangh established in 1923, Maharashtriya Mandal established in 1924, Navmaharashtra Sangh established in 1960 and Dajisaheb Natu Badminton Promotion Foundation, established in 1994.

The fifth award was given to the 2018 Padmashree awardee and Paralympic gold medalist Murlikant Petkar, who was paralysed when he was hit by a bullet in his spine during the 1965 Indo-Pak war. Petkar, who spoke at the event, said, “It took so long for me to get a Padma award, but it is okay. Now others should think, that if a physically challenged person like me can bring a gold medal, then, so can each one of you.”

Pawar, who was the chief guest, said, “I have headed many sports bodies. I never interfered in the sports aspects but focused on creating necessary support for the sportsmen. Also, there are many awards for individuals in sports but it is important to also honour the organisations which create these players.”
