Flood in Dhayari: Floodwater Contaminates Well, Cleaning Work Underway

Residents to Face Water Shortage for Two Days; Tanker Supply Falls Short

Ankur Nikam

Pune, 20 June 2025: Heavy rains in Dhayri village and the DSK Vishwa area have caused floodwater from a nearby drain to enter the well at Barangane Mala, contaminating the main water source for the locality. This has resulted in an immediate water supply cut, and residents have been warned of a shortage for at least two days until the well is cleaned.

Following the contamination, the Municipal Corporation tested the water and confirmed the presence of harmful bacteria. There have been reports of patients suffering from Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) due to the contaminated water, with some fatalities also being reported in the affected areas, including Dhayri, DSK Vishwa, Kirkatwadi, Narhe, and Nanded.

Due to the continuous rainfall, the drain in Barangane Mala overflowed, causing sewage water to mix with the well. Around two to two and a half feet of dirty water collected around the well and entered it, posing a serious health risk to residents. After receiving complaints, the Municipal Corporation immediately stopped the water supply and began pumping out the contaminated water.

According to the head of the water supply department, Nandkishore Jagtap, the well will be thoroughly cleaned before restoring the supply to the affected areas. To help residents cope, the Municipal Corporation has deployed water tankers. However, locals have complained that the number of tankers provided, especially in DSK Vishwa, is insufficient to meet the demand.

Rahul Pokale from the Nationalist Congress Party stated that it was only after his complaint that the administration took prompt action. He added that the pumping work has now begun and requested that the Municipal Corporation make more tankers available to avoid further inconvenience to the people.
