Pune, 10 July 2025: The Maharashtra government has officially declared Ganeshotsav as the state festival, recognizing its deep cultural, historical, and social significance. First initiated by Lokmanya Tilak in 1893, Ganeshotsav was envisioned as a unifying celebration promoting nationalism, social awareness, and pride in native language and traditions. Today, the festival continues in the same spirit, reflecting Maharashtra’s heritage and collective identity.

During the state assembly session, the government clarified its stance and future commitment towards promoting Ganeshotsav not only across India but also globally. Despite attempts by some groups to challenge the public celebration of Ganeshotsav in various courts, the current Mahayuti government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, has successfully removed those roadblocks with urgency and clarity.

A major point of contention in recent years has been the use of Plaster of Paris (POP) idols. Earlier governments had imposed restrictions based on CPCB guidelines, citing environmental concerns.

However, following a comprehensive study and with approval from Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav, the government lifted several restrictions. As a result, making, displaying, and selling POP idols is now permitted, in accordance with court rulings.

The government has also promised full administrative and financial support to ensure the festival is celebrated with enthusiasm across the state. From providing adequate police security to strengthening infrastructure, the state will ensure that major celebrations in cities like Mumbai, Pune, and others are well-supported.

The government has also appealed to Ganesh mandals to incorporate themes reflecting the nation’s progress and pride, including tributes to soldiers, social causes, historic personalities, and national development projects like Operation Sindoor. As Maharashtra’s official state festival, Ganeshotsav will now be promoted as a blend of devotion, social awareness, and eco-friendly celebration.
