PUNE: A 13-year-old girl, the daughter of a farmer, was treated for Kyphosis at Sassoon General Hospital (SGH).

Kyphosis is a spinal disorder in which an excessive outward curve of the spine results in an abnormal rounding of the upper back.

The girl was taken to various private doctors, however, due to high costs of treatment, her family did not get her treated.

At last, her family sought an opinion from doctors at SGH. 

Dr Ambarish Mathesul, an orthopedist suggested a surgery at SGH. 

“She underwent an MRI scan, CT scan and X-ray were done and she was diagnosed with Kyphosis. The reports showed there were two protruding at the thoracic and lumbar parts of the spinal cord,” said doctors from SGH.

The surgery was done on February 8. “Twenty four screws were used to correct her spine posture. Neuro Technique was used to treat nearby nerves which could have affected movements in her hands and legs,” said Dr Ajay Chandanwale, Dean of SGH.

The surgery took five hours and the patient is now doing okay. 

“Kyphosis is seen more in young girls who are five to 15 years old. The patient may get a hunchback or a swayback due to this. The growth of the child stops and the legs and waist are weakened. If the right treatment is given at the age of 10 to 15 years of age, the back can be strengthened. In SGH, under the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MJPJAY), the treatment is given for free,” said Dr Chandanwale.
