A Pune-based advocate has filed a formal complaint with the police, alleging that Pandya disrespected the Indian national flag during the festivities following India’s victory over New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday.
The complaint, lodged at the Shivaji Nagar Police Station in Pune, seeks the registration of an FIR under the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971. While the Men in Blue secured a record third title, the complainant argues thatHardik Pandya, went too far in his on-field revelry.
The controversy stems from viral social media clips showing Pandya celebrating the historic win with his girlfriend, Mahieka Sharma. According to the complaint filed by Advocate Wajid Khan, the cricketer’s conduct undermined the dignity of the tricolour.
The specific grievances include:
Draping: Draping the national flag over his shoulders while dancing and running across the field.
Podium incident: Lying down on the victory podium alongside Sharma while the flag remained wrapped around his body.
"Tied" flag: Allegations that the flag was tied to his back in a manner that was deemed disrespectful.
Speaking to the media, Advocate Wajid Khan expressed his indignation over the viral footage, emphasizing that victory does not excuse a lack of formality toward national symbols.
