Pune, 27 October 2025: After two days of calm weather, heavy rain returned to Pune on Sunday (October 26), disrupting city for hours. The downpour, accompanied by thunder, lightning, and strong winds, lasted for almost three hours and threw traffic out of gear across the city and suburbs.
The sudden showers caught many residents off guard, as the city’s main roads and underpasses quickly went underwater. Traffic slowed to a crawl at several key junctions, with vehicles stranded in long queues during the evening rush hour. The situation worsened due to the post-Diwali return rush, as thousands of commuters tried to re-enter the city after the long weekend.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Pune, forecasting more rain with thunderstorms and lightning over the next two days. Despite October nearing its end, rain continues across parts of Maharashtra due to active weather systems over the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea.
A low-pressure area over the Bay is likely to intensify into a cyclone by Monday (October 27), while another low-pressure belt is active over the Arabian Sea, creating favourable conditions for rainfall across the state.
On Sunday, maximum temperatures in Pune dropped slightly to around 30°C, with a minimum of 21.1°C. The mix of sunshine and rain left the air humid and uncomfortable. The fire department reported five incidents of tree falls in areas such as Yerawada, Shastrinagar, Kondhwa Budruk, and Hadapsar, though no injuries were reported.
According to the IMD, Monday’s forecast for Pune indicates cloudy skies with light to moderate rain, thunder, and lightning. Maximum temperature is expected to fall to around 29°C, while Tuesday may see a gradual rise. The department has also warned of thunderstorms and gusty winds in parts of Konkan and central Maharashtra, with isolated showers in Marathwada and Vidarbha.
The IMD has urged citizens to remain cautious during the next two days as unseasonal rain and thunderstorms continue to affect large parts of the state.
