Pune: Finally good news for 35 lakh Punekers as all the four dams supplying drinking water to Pune have filled to 100 per cent capacity with the continuous rainfall in the catchment ares of Khadakwasla, Varasgaon, Panshet and Temghar dam.

According to the data provided by the Maharashtra State Water Resources Department on Tuesday evening, the four dams were filled up to 99.96 per cent.

Moreover, the Water Resources Department started discharge of dam water up to 4,280 cusecs into Mutha river to accommodate the inflow of rainwater from catchment areas into the dams.

The officers of Water Resources Department informed Sakal Times that the rain is subdued but it is still falling. Khadakwasla, Varasgaon and Panshet dams were filled up to 100 per cent while Temghar dam will be kept empty to some extent to carry out the dam repair work post monsoon.

Compared to last year’s data, the four dams were filled up on the same day. Every day, the PMC lifts 1,250 MLD water to supply to the population of more than 35 lakh people and for supplying water for the entire year, the Water Supply Department of the PMC needs around 14 thousand million cubic (TMC) feet water, which is almost half storage capacity of the four dams.

Since June 1 the total rainfall in the four dams is 7,078 mm and last year on the same day the total rainfall was 7,419 mm.

Pune every year needs around 14 to 16 TMC ft water while the remaining water is reserved for the purpose of agriculture and drinking water for three talukas of Daund, Indapur and Baramati.
