Heavy Rains in Pune: IMD Issues Red Alert, People Asked to Stay Safe

Risk of Landslides, Flooding and Thunderstorms as Low-Pressure System Intensifies Over Arabian Sea

Ankur Nikam

Pune, 19 June 2025: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Pune and nearby ghat areas, warning of very heavy rain and strong winds throughout the day. People have been asked to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel, especially early in the morning and late at night. The weather department has also warned of possible landslides, waterlogging, and thunderstorms.

This heavy rain is due to a strong low-pressure area over the east-central Arabian Sea and the North Konkan coast. This system is pulling in a lot of moisture from the sea, causing heavy showers in Pune and other parts of western Maharashtra. Since early Thursday morning, many areas in Pune have seen light to moderate rain, making roads slippery and slowing down traffic.

The rain is likely to continue till the weekend, and the authorities say schools may remain closed if needed. People planning to travel through ghat roads are advised to avoid it as the roads may become unsafe due to landslides and slippery conditions. The IMD says the rain might reduce slightly from Friday but some places may still get heavy showers.

The Irrigation Department has asked people living near the Indrayani river and warkaris in areas like Jambavade, Sudumbare, Sudavadi, Dehu–Alandi to Tulapur to stay away from the river. Due to the rain and rising water levels in the dam, sudden water release is possible and can be dangerous. Officials are keeping an eye on the situation and will give timely updates.

Even though the heavy rain has caused worry, it will help cool down the summer heat. The IMD has said that Pune will have cloudy skies and light rain till June 24. Citizens are requested to follow weather updates, stay safe, and avoid risky areas during this rainy period.
