Pune, 17 December 2025: Kamala Nehru Hospital, run by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), is set to strengthen its medical services with the induction of 17 specialist doctors from today. The development follows the civic body’s decision to significantly increase salaries to attract expert medical professionals.
The hospital, located in Mangalwar Peth and considered PMC’s largest healthcare facility, had been facing a shortage of specialist doctors for several years. Due to inadequate manpower, patients often had to be referred to Sassoon General Hospital for advanced treatment.
Despite repeated recruitment drives, PMC failed to attract specialists as the earlier pay structure was not competitive. To address this issue and ensure better healthcare for citizens, the civic administration decided to revise the salary structure.
After a hospital inspection conducted a few months ago, Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram approved ₹13 crore to upgrade facilities at Kamala Nehru Hospital. He also proposed a substantial hike in monthly salaries for specialist doctors, which was later approved by the Standing Committee.
Under the revised plan, PMC decided to appoint 25 specialist doctors with a monthly remuneration of ₹2.5 lakh. Following the advertisement, around 76 applications were received. After scrutiny and interviews, 17 doctors have been appointed so far.
The newly appointed specialists include seven gynecologists, six pediatricians, two anesthetists, and two physicians. According to Deputy Health Officer Dr. Kalpana Balivant, the remaining posts will be filled in the next phase.
With the arrival of these specialists, Kamala Nehru Hospital is expected to provide more comprehensive treatment services, reducing the burden on other government hospitals and improving patient care in the city.
