The leadership of Congress is likely to revamp the Maharashtra unit of the party by naming Vidarbha legislator and Speaker of the assembly, Nana Patole, as its head of state unit and giving the post of the Speaker to former CM Prithviraj Chavan.

If that happens, Patole will succeed Balasaheb Thorat who is now minister of revenue in the MVA government, member of the CWC and leader of the legislature party in addition to being head of the State unit.

The party wants to implement the one-leader-one-post principle and wants to be seen as being able to build up pressure on CM Uddhav Thackeray and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar in the light of Rahul Gandhi's statement 3 days ago that Congress just helping and did not running the Maharashtra government.

Congress earlier intended to appoint Chavan as Speaker of the assembly. However, his name was dropped after the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), a coalition partner on the MVA objected. Moreover, because of the small departments given to Congress, Chavan could not join the MVA cabinet either.

This possible change in the leadership of Congress in Maharashtra comes at a time when the BJP has launched Andolan "Maharashtra Bachao" against the MVA government led by Shiv Sena over its handling of the COVID-19 crisis.

Nevertheless, only after having a go-ahead from the ruling coalition, the NCP would the party high command give its formal consent to these moves. During last year's government formation, the Congress considered Chavan 's name for the Speaker's post, but it was dropped because of NCP 's opposition. Afterwards, Patole was selected as a candidate for consensus.
