Maharashtra to expect heavy rains; Pune, Ratnagiri on orange alert

Maharashtra is expected to witness heavy rainfall during the next five days

Pune: Many regions of Maharashtra is expected to witness heavy rainfall during the next five days,” said IMD (Indian Meteorological Department). Some regions of Maharashtra reported thundershowers with lightning associated with heavy pouring in the last two to three consecutive days.

According to the weather department extremely heavy rainfall (more than 20 cm per day) at isolated places would occur over Telangana; heavy to very heavy falls at isolated places over coastal and north interior Karnataka, south Konkan, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra and Marathawada region. KS Hosalikar, Deputy Director of IMD Mumbai, tweeted that there would be heavy to very heavy rainfall in Konkan, south Maharashtra and some places in Marathwada mainly because of a deep depression created over the Bay of Bengal.

Pune district was lashed by heavy rains for last two days as low hanging clouds built over the area. The city witnessed heavy rains on Tuesday too. The weather department has predicted that Pune and neighbouring areas will get moderate rain areas along with thunderstorm and lightning over the next four days.

Anupam Kashyapi, head, Weather department, IMD-Pune was quoted as saying by Indian Express, “By October 12, the depression will further intensity and form a deep depression. As it crosses over to land along Visakhapatnam and Kakinada on Monday and approaches westwards towards Maharashtra, it will make the monsoon active over most parts of the state.”

Also, the weather department has notified an orange alert for Pune on Wednesday. Also, the districts such as Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg will have orange alert for Thursday and Friday.
