Pune, 11 February 2026: In a major late-night search action, Pune Police conducted an extensive combing operation in Budhwar Peth between midnight and 3 am, carrying out searches in more than 50 houses and imposing strict barricades across all lanes in the area.
The operation involved local police stations along with multiple units of the Crime Branch. A heavy police presence entered Budhwar Peth around 12 am, with checkpoints set up on all roads leading in and out of the locality to prevent movement during the searches.
Women police personnel questioned women residing in brothels near the Friday Peth police outpost, while several young men found in the area were searched and questioned. Police officials said the main objective was to check the circulation of drugs, prevent minors from being forced into prostitution, and identify illegal residents, particularly Bangladeshi nationals.
This large-scale action comes in the backdrop of the recent suspension of a woman police constable from Faraskhana Police Station. She was accused of failing to act against an illegally staying Bangladeshi woman in Budhwar Peth and of not informing senior officers despite having prior information.
Allegations were also made that she accepted money from the woman, leading to her suspension.
Senior police officials said the midnight operation was planned immediately after the incident to send a strong message and ensure that such lapses do not recur. Police sources stated that several suspects were questioned during the operation and further action will be taken based on the findings.
Officials reiterated that similar surprise checks will continue to maintain strict vigilance in sensitive areas of the city.
