Pune, 16 March 2026: A group of 14 men from Kondhwa and Camp areas was allegedly attacked by a mob while they had gathered near a lake close to Bopdev Ghat to break their Ramzan fast on Friday evening.
The incident occurred around 6.30 pm near Askarwadi in Purandar. According to the complaint filed by Amin Shaikh (31), a resident of Kondhwa, he and 13 friends had gone to the lakeside to perform iftar when a group of men arrived on two-wheelers and four-wheelers and questioned their presence there.
Shaikh alleged that some of the men objected to them wearing skullcaps and soon began assaulting the group with sticks and sharp weapons. As the victims tried to flee, several attackers chased them, beat them and allegedly raised religious slogans. One of the accused was also reportedly carrying a pistol and threatened to open fire.
During the assault, the attackers allegedly snatched mobile phones and cash worth ₹7,500 from the victims. Shaikh said he lost consciousness during the attack and the assailants fled the spot believing he had died.
Feroz Syyed, another victim who runs a cloth shop on MG Road in the Camp area, said several members of the group sustained injuries to their head, back and legs. The victims later managed to reach safety and received treatment at a hospital in Kondhwa.
Police registered a case against around 100 to 150 unidentified persons. Three suspects have been identified so far, and efforts are underway to trace the remaining accused and verify whether they are linked to any organisation.
The case has been registered under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Arms Act.
