ST CORRESPONDENT

Pune: The National War Memorial is the only war memorial in South Asia that has been erected through citizens contributions with names of post-independence martyrs belonging to the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force, hailing from Maharashtra, inscribed on marble. Now, patriotic videos are being screened and in coming months, a light and sound show will also be held.

The memorial is 18-metre high tower dressed in cherry brown granite with marble panels carrying names of the martyrs who laid down their lives in action since August 15, 1947. This ionic place remains one of the main attraction for Puneites who turn out in large numbers every Saturday to witness the wreath-laying ceremony for the soldiers for the sacrifices they made for the nation.

In a press release, Southern Command informed, “The patriotic videos provide visitors with an insight into the pivotal role of the Indian Army in various fields. The objective behind the screening of videos is to imbibe patriotic fervour and instill confidence in the minds of the visitors. Visitors were heard chanting ‘Jai Hind’ and ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’and other nationalist slogans after the culmination of the screening.”

“In coming months, a light and sound show to depict the glorious history of the Southern Command since its inception and martial history of Indian Army covering various operations, war and battles will also be showcased for the visitors,” the press release read.
