Pune, 19 January 2026: Two separate incidents of injuries caused by nylon kite string (manjha) have once again highlighted the danger posed by its illegal use in city, even though it is officially banned.

In the first incident, 34-year-old Aditya Gaud, a resident of Aundh, was riding his two-wheeler home from work along the Aundh–Baner Road on January 14 evening. Near Kasturba Vasahat, a nylon string suddenly struck his neck, causing a deep cut.

While trying to protect himself, he instinctively grabbed the string, which led to serious injuries to his hand as well. He was rushed for medical treatment after the incident.

A similar and equally alarming incident was reported from the Yerwada area. Amrut Lokhande, 35, a resident of Vishrantwadi, was riding through the Sadalbaba Dargah Road when a nylon string got tightly wrapped around his helmet and face.

The sharp string cut through the helmet, injuring his left eye and thumb. Lokhande later said that wearing a helmet likely saved his life, though he suffered serious facial injuries.

Both incidents have renewed public anger over the unchecked sale and use of nylon manjha in the city. Although the material is banned due to its lethal impact on humans, pedestrians, and birds, it continues to be sold openly. Citizens say police action against sellers is occasional and insufficient, especially during festivals and kite-flying seasons.

Residents have now demanded strict and sustained enforcement against those selling and using nylon manjha to prevent further accidents and loss of life. As reported to Sakal, victims and citizens alike stress that stronger action is the only way to curb these recurring and dangerous incidents.
