PCMC to implement bicycle sharing plan

ST CORRESPONDENT

Pimpri: On the lines of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) is also planning to implement bicycle sharing scheme in the city. The first meeting was held on Thursday by Municipal Commissioner Shravan Hardikar. The consultant who runs the cycle sharing scheme in Pune city has made a presentation about the plan.

The civic body is planning to chalk out 'Non-Motorisation Transport plan for the city. Also, the policy for this will be submitted for approval shortly in the General Body.

The number of two-wheeler and four-wheeler vehicles is increasing in Pimpri-Chinchwad. PCMC authorities are of the view that introduction of the bicycle scheme in the city will curb increasing number of private vehicles. A bicycle can be used for travelling a short distance in the city.

In the most areas of the city, bicycle tracks are missing.

Therefore, in the master plan for the non-motorised transport for the city, the corporation will have to propose a network of cycle tracks. Tracks were built on the big roads but, they are not being used. Providing cycle tracks is must on BRTS roads but they are not constructed even after getting crores for the purpose from the Central government.

Hardikar said, "The civic body is going to chalk out a master plan for non-motorised transport in the city and this plan includes three things. Pedestrian routes, footpaths and parking will be considered. Also, steps will be taken to increase the use of public transport. To facilitate transportation, a network of feeder root is also under consideration. A Mobility Plan will be prepared accordingly."

Additional Commissioner Dr Pravin Ashtikar, City Engineer Ambadas Chavan, Joint City Engineer Rajan Patil, Executive Engineer Shrikant Savave and others were present.
