PMC to build four parking lots near Baner and Balewadi Metro stations.
First phase of Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar Metro to start in 2–3 months.
Decision on who will run the parking facilities is yet to be made.
Pune, 29 October 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to build four parking facilities near Metro stations in Baner and Balewadi to make travel smoother for commuters for using the upcoming Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar Metro route.
These parking lots will later be given to the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), which operates the Metro network.
The first phase of the Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar Metro line, stretching from Hinjawadi to Baner, is expected to begin operations within the next two to three months. The full corridor is likely to be functional within a year. The new parking spaces are being planned to ensure that more citizens, especially those working in Hinjawadi’s IT Park, can easily switch to the Metro for their daily commute.
PMRDA had earlier requested eight parking sites from the PMC. After discussions, the civic body approved four of them, near Amar Tech Park and Iris Society in Balewadi, and near Cosmos Society and the ABZ area in Baner. These locations are within 200 to 400 meters of the nearest Metro stations, providing convenient access for commuters to park their vehicles and board the train.
Initially, the PMC had planned to both build and operate these parking facilities itself. However, the revised plan focuses on completing construction first and then deciding who will manage the day-to-day operations. This change aims to speed up the process and ensure the parking spaces are ready before the Metro service begins.
Officials from PMC’s project department said that a joint meeting between PMC and PMRDA will soon be held to finalize the operational responsibilities. Once completed, the parking lots are expected to play a key role in promoting public transport use and reducing private vehicle congestion in Pune’s Baner–Balewadi corridor.
